Amazing York Maze

Post Type

We were lucky enough to be invited back to York Maze for a 3rd year. It’s starting to become a summer family tradition! And one we most certainly all look forward to each year.

The kids scanned the map at the entrance to remind themselves of all the fun attractions and spot the new ones.

Having decided to hit the Giant Maize Maze first, off we went!

We like to let the kids lead the way as the beauty of York Maze is you know if you do get lost, you’re in a safe environment so it allows the kids to practise a bit of independence.

It can be frustrating knowing they are going in the wrong direction (not that we even know the right way most of the time) but it’s great fun watching them hit dead ends and try again.

There are 6 towers in total where you can get up high and spot the next tower to head towards. This year’s theme was The Lion King and each station has a themed question.

The kids then need to get to the next station to find the answer.

Tower 2 was pretty difficult to find and after several attempts the words “Daddy, please help us” could be heard!

Thankfully despite being terrible following directions in the car, I have a good sense of direction on foot so was able to steer them the right way, phew!

It’s really cool being in the maize maze and hidden away from everything.

Emma was very happy to find a ladybird too.

The Lion King theme was a real winner with our two, especially as we have our big Disney holiday coming up this year and let’s face it, who doesn’t smile when Hakuna Matata comes on?!

Having conquered the big maze, the kids were very excited to head back to the Finger Fortune Maze. 5 stations to find, each with a pot of coloured chalk.

The main aim is to emerge from the maze with 5 different coloured finger tips then to find your combination on the chart and see what funny action you get, such as walk like a chicken.

There’s a sink to wash hands really close by and you can go via the Giant Mural Painting.

Next we went to the Jurassic Maize which is a new feature for York Maze this year, if your kids love dinosaurs, they’re going to love this as around every corner there’s a one waiting to be found.

Despite being in York we even managed a visit to Cornwall while we were there, ha!

I love the strength and skill involved in climbing and I think it’s a fantastic activity for kids.

If you’ve visited York Maze before you’ll know they have had some great themes over the years such as Harry Potter and Star Wars, there’s still some evidence to be found around the site.

Last year we couldn’t convince Emma to go on Crowmania 2 because she was so afraid she was going to get soaked. This year, having been told by Adam and Amy that they didn’t really get wet, we all went on. Well – we definitely got wet! This is a tractor ride with a difference. A funny show on the road with some water fun along the way.

Then it was time for some bouncing fun on the Popcorn Pillow. What was nice for those parents with younger children is there are two queues, one for big kids, one for younger children. This meant that the tots could also enjoy bouncing without being thrown off with the weight of the big kids!

Now time to relax!

A great addition to York Maze this year was Utter Cornage which was a very wet game, much to Adam’s delight. The concept of the game was to pump as much water as you could into one of the pots that were sitting above other people’s heads and if your pot started to tip, get out the way sharpish.

Fantastic to watch and we quite happily watched people getting soaked while we ate our picnic, haha!

Checkout the Cobmobile!

We’ve never been on Corn on the Quad before and the kids were desperate to have a go. This was one of the few things that you do have to pay extra for while you are there but they were only £1 a quad. They are really close to the play parks too so a nice opportunity for the grown ups to have a rest while the kids play happily.

The Volcorno was new last year and our two loved it.

They were excited to tackle it again this year.

It’s a big climb up and a big slide down. Could have fancied a go myself!

Last but by no means least, we finished the day with a visit to the New House of even more Cornfusion. After the Giant Maize Maze, this has to be our favourite bit. Hard to describe so you’re just going to have to visit York Maze to try it for yourself. In summary, lots of mirrors, things to make you feel dizzy and an ending that makes you believe gravity has definitely been messed with. Despite coming out not knowing whether you’re coming or going, we always come out and join the queue again to go in for a second time.

The kids were very proud to have completed all the Maize Mazes and spent their pocket money on a medal to show their achievement. We racked up over 14,000 steps and a great day was had by all.
