Össur Has My Back

Post Type

Training has been going really well over the past few weeks. Consistency is key and I’ve certainly been consistent.

I turned 40 back in September and although this post is a review of a back support, this is unfortunately something that hasn’t just come with age! I’ve had a tender neck and back for quite a few years now. Not sure what to blame it on, it definitely wasn’t my training though!

Össur were founded in 1971, their mission is to improve people’s mobility. Here’s a pretty cool video explaining a little bit more.

They have a fantastic range of solutions including for prosthetic, osteoarthritis and injury. The Formfit range is amazing with various supports for the knee, ankle, foot, neck, shoulder, elbow, thumb and wrist. I selected the ‘Pro Back’ from the Össur Formfit range and it’s excellent quality.

Ossur Has My Back

The Össur Formfit Pro Back provides relief for people suffering from pains and strains in the lower back. This is where I seem to get most of my little niggles! The belt features superior moisture wicking capabilities and is highly breathable. The back panel design is patented and utilises their ‘StayBilizer’ technology to provide optimum shape and fit. The belt has various size options available. For example, a medium covers a waist circumference of 90cm to 100cm. I found the fit to be very good! Here’s a little video that explains more.

The Össur Formfit Pro Back is perfect for lower back conditions that may benefit from compression and gross motion restriction. Conditions such as:

  • Lower back pain (Lumbago)
  • Lumbosacral sprain / strain
  • Degenerative joint / disc disease

At the back of the belt is a ‘SmartPad’ and it provides targeted support and cushioning. This can be removed if desired.

If you have any further questions, the Össur website has agents available via an online chat. One popped up the other day asking me about my thoughts on the back support, it was like big brother watching me, haha.

Now you may be thinking about resting up if you have lower back pain. This is what not to do! My Mrs gets lower back pain on the days she’s been sat at her desk for too long but on the days away from her desk we’re much more active and she hardly complains about it. It’s the same for me, the gym makes my back stronger.

I thought I’d take this opportunity to highlight some exercises I do via WebMD that may help you with your lower back pain. Always consult a healthcare professional before diving in though!

Wall Sits

Stand 10 to 12 inches from the wall, then lean back until your back is flat against the wall. Slowly slide down until your knees are slightly bent, pressing your lower back into the wall. Hold for a count of 10, then carefully slide back up the wall. Repeat 8 to 12 times.

Press-up Back Extensions

Lie on your stomach with your hands under your shoulders. Push with your hands so your shoulders begin to lift off the floor. If it’s comfortable for you, put your elbows on the floor directly under your shoulders and hold this position for several seconds.

Bridging

Ossur Has My Back

Lie on your back with knees bent and just your heels on the floor. Push your heels into the floor, squeeze your buttocks, and lift your hips off the floor until shoulders, hips, and knees are in a straight line. Hold about 6 seconds, and then slowly lower hips to the floor and rest for 10 seconds. Repeat 8 to 12 times. Avoid arching your lower back as your hips move upward. Avoid overarching by tightening your abdominal muscles prior and throughout the lift.

I’m very impressed with the Össur Formfit Pro Back. I think it’s excellent quality and it provides the right level of support while remaining comfortable. If you are in need of some support, Össur will have your back! See what I did there.

Thanks for reading,
